HERE'S THE ISSUE:
New therapists, registered mental health counselor interns and registered marriage and family therapy interns who want to start or grow their private practice fall into one of two pitfalls.
The Group Practice Trap
Group practice doctors want to have a constant supply of referrals. Group settings enable you to have office assistants, a professional website with excellent SEO, and furnished offices.
However, these systems have a hefty price tag. Therapists must pay 30-40% (or more! eeek) of their income to the organization. Once the therapist establishes a regular salary, the percentage share becomes punitive and disheartening.
Often, these therapists are unable to control their own schedules or choose which types of clients they will see. They are viewed as a worker by their employers. More cons include:
Billing staff
Admin staff
Inflexible office space
W-2 employee constraints
45% group practice percentage split
The Solopreneur Private Practice Trap
Solopreneurs value freedom, independence, and self-reliance. They're most often either signing a long-term lease on an office (an expensive and time-consuming commitment) or subleasing a furnished one (which hinders expansion due to the limited availability of offices). To be successful, the solopreneur must be an expert in website development, blog writing, social media marketing, SEO, photograph and video production, and copywriting. Many solopreneurs quickly learn that this is an endless and draining task.
Some of these solopreneurs escape the pit, but many others are unable to generate consistent referral flows from their activities. Instead, they must accept a lower fee and fewer hours. On top of this, they must pay hefty start-up fees. More cons include:
Office lease
Website maintenance
SEO and Marketing costs
Office Supplies, WiFi
Furniture, decór
Clinical support (coaching/consultation)
$2400 private practice expenses per month
Therapists, more than anything, want:
Financial Freedom
The majority of therapists desire control over their fees and finances. You don't want to wait on a W-2, and you don't want your price set by the group. You wish to establish your own hours, negotiate your fee, and select how you'll serve your clients.
Your Unique VIRTUAL Setting or Office Space & Style
You don't want some other person's degree or family photos in your workplace. You want a lovely area that reflects the high standard of your clinical work. A location where clients feel at ease and you feel proud of. You want to operate beside other clinicians who refer to you, as well as therapists with whom you can trust. You choose what works best for your lifestyle.
Consistent Referrals
When you are part of a multidisciplinary team, you choose your niche and favorite types of clients that you work well with. This is a win-win for you and your clients. When we connect with our clients in ways that best serve them, and we use our natural aptitudes and abilities, it feels right! This becomes our passion, purpose, and feels fulfilling. When we relate to ourselves and clients in this powerful way, our “work” becomes our “play”. We don’t have to fear burn-out, when we approach our private practice business in empowering ways. It's nice to know you can bank on a consistent flow of referrals with guidance. You don't have to worry whether you are marketing or advertising correctly. You can say "no" to clients who don't seems like a good fit or match your hours or specialty. One of my favorite quotes:
"The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his spirituality. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both". ~James A. Michener
